Magnus Nicholson
Magnus Nicholson Date of Birth: Jun 18, 1871 Share "Magnus Nicholson" on FacebookBorn near Oswestry in 1871, Magnus moved to Bedford in 1890 where he took up a teaching position at the Harpur Trust Elementary Boys School.
Already known for his prowess on the football field, as a defender of class he played for West Brom as an amateur, winning an FA Cup winners medal in 1892. Coming to Luton in 1894, on entry to the Southern League, Magnus showed his control and ability in the Luton defence when he played but as an amateur he was free to turn out for who he wanted with Bedford Town the occasional beneficiaries.
Having left the teaching profession and taking up a short term post with Thomas Cook in Cairo he discovered a wanderlust and worked in Vienna where he was instrumental in putting Austrian football on the map with his legacy being a team named after him – FC Nicholson.
In later life he was a quarry owner and passed away in Oswestry in 1941.
