Malcolm Macdonald

Malcolm Ian Macdonald Date of Birth: Jan 7, 1950

When Luton signed a little-known full-back from Fulham for £17,500 in the summer of 1969 it raised no more than a couple of column inches in the local press. Within a couple of months, converted to a forward because of injuries, Mac became a goalscoring sensation and in two seasons at Kenilworth Road netted 49 goals in 88 League starts and earned himself a big money move to Newcastle.

On Tyneside, Mac became every bit the hero he had been at Luton only this time he started to pick up England caps along the way, scoring five in one international, before surprisingly accepting a £333,333 transfer to Arsenal in 1976.

Wear and tear to his knees forced him into retirement at the age of 29 and on rejoining Fulham, Mac took over the hot seat in 1980 and guided the Cottagers to promotion. He resigned after publicity about his private life and is now a radio broadcaster on Tyneside.
