Mark was born in Ashington, Northumberland and first joined up with the Newcastle United academy in 2006. He spent 2 years on Tyneside before being released and joining Hull, where he would graduate from the academy. He was given his first chance in first team football as a substitute against Wigan in the FA Cup in January 2010 after impressing in the youth team, scoring 27 goals during the first half of the 2009/2010 season. Just 3 Months later, Mark made his Premier League debut off the bench against Sunderland, before scoring his first senior goal against Wigan after making his first start for the Tigers.

Cullen signed new terms at the Humberside club running until the end of the 2012/13 season, before being loaned out to Bradford for a month, making 4 appearances. Cullen went on to have 2 unsuccessful loans at Bury, before joining Stockport on loan, where he scored a respectable 4 goals in 16 Conference matches. Mark was released by Hull at the end of his contract and then snapped up by John Still at Kenilworth Road in May 2013. Arguably Marks best Luton goal came against Cambridge United the 2013/14 season, as he scored an injury-time equaliser to make it 1-1, proving to be a crucial goal in the race for Promotion from the Blue Square Premier League. Following promotion, It kept getting better for Mark Cullen, scoring the Hatters first goal back in the Football League, away at Carlisle. During a successful League 2 campaign for Mark, which included him a Player of the Month Award for October, John Still revealed Cullen desired to play at a higher level and move closer to his family up North.

Ahead of the 2015/16 season, Cullen signed for Blackpool, for a fee in the region of £180,000. However, with Blackpool being relegated to League 2, Cullen would come back to haunt the Hatters in the 2016/17 play off campaign, scoring a hat-trick in a 3-2 win for the Tangerines in the first leg of the Semi Final. With Luton losing the second leg in heartbreaking fashion at Kenilworth Road.

Since his departure from Blackpool, Cullen has slowly descended down the football pyramid, joining League 2 Port Vale in 2019, and then Hartlepool in 2021, before dropping back into non league to join Fylde in the National League, and then step 3 team Bamber Bridge.
