Marlon Beresford

Marlon Beresford Date of Birth: Sep 2, 1969

The Lincolnshire stopper held the distinction of being the oldest goalkeeper to turn out for the Hatters in league football, which has since been surpassed by Mark Tyler in the 2015/2016 season.

Marlon enjoyed a career that saw him turning out between the sticks 471 times in competitive matches for twelve clubs. He started off as a youth trainee at Sheffield Wednesday before making his first appearance in the league whilst on loan at Bury in August 1989, before further loan moves to Northampton and Crewe. He then transferred to Burnley, where he became a cult hero, making 240 appearances for the Clarets, before transferring to Premier League Middlesbrough for £400,000. He failed to break into the first team at Boro, making loan moves to Sheffield Wednesday (where his career had started), Wolves and then back to Burnley. Following his contract expiration at Middlesbrough, he passed through at York City, Burnley and Bradford City, before joining Luton on a free transfer in October 2003, although a transfer embargo prevented him from joining permanently, meaning he joined Barnsley briefly before Mike Newell re signed Marlon on a free transfer on the 1st July 2004. Playing 132 times for the Hatters, he was released in the summer of 2008, after falling out of favour with the management.

Marlon has kept busy post retirement, running an Accountancy training company in Belfast & Edinburgh as well as having worked as a goalkeeping coach for the Irish Football Association, Barnet, Motherwell, Al-Shabab, Al-Nassr, Al-Hazm and Woking FC.
