Matt Tees

Matt Tees Date of Birth: Oct 13, 1939

Matt Tees did not look like a ‘goal machine’, as he was called on the terraces, being slight and not particularly tall but he was tremendously brave, very strong and phenomenal in the air.

Joining Grimsby from Airdrie in 1963, Matt soon formed a prolific partnership with future Hatter Rodney Green leading to the pair of them moving to Charlton for a joint fee of £23,000 in 1967.

Luton manager Alec Stock, looking for a partner for his young striker Malcolm Macdonald, managed to prise Matt from Charlton for £25,000 in 1969 and he proved a wonderful tutor as well as weighing in with his share of goals as the Town won promotion from Division Three in 1970.

Job done, Matt moved back to Grimsby, where he had earned legend status, to finish his playing career and he was still living in the area in retirement at the time of his death in 2020.
