Mike Newell

Michael Colin Newell Date of Birth: Jan 27, 1965

Rejected by home town club Liverpool as a junior, Mike joined Crewe but was allowed to slip away from Gresty Road to Wigan where he enjoyed some success leading to a £90,000 move to David Pleat’s top flight Luton in January 1986.

At Kenilworth Road, Mike netted 18 goals in 63 League appearances, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 trouncing of Liverpool, but was then surprisingly moved on to Leicester by new boss Ray Harford who felt the club had an embarrassment of riches up front!

By the time he hung up his boots Mike had notched up over 500 League and Cup appearances for 12 clubs attracting transfer fees of £3.5 million along the way.

After coaching at Tranmere, Mike took Hartlepool to promotion and then did the same for the Hatters in 2005.
