Joining his local club Leeds United from school, full-back Paul won England Youth caps but managed only one League appearance which came in a 0-3 defeat at Arsenal in October 1996.

Loan spells at Ayr and Tranmere then followed leading to a permanent transfer to the former club after which Paul threw in his lot with Keflavik in Iceland.

With Luton needing full-back cover as they fought to avoid the drop to the football basement in 2001 Paul was picked up on a short term contract by Hatters manager Joe Kinnear and played the last seven games of a disastrous campaign.

Paul was released that summer and turned out for Scarborough, Leigh RMI, Harrogate and Stalybridge before hanging up his boots.
