Paul started in football with Altrincham where he combined his part-time playing career with that of a part-time policeman.

A move to the full-time ranks with Barry Fry’s Barnet followed for the left sided-midfielder but with cash restraints biting at Underhill, Paul was granted a technical free transfer and was snapped up by Bradford City, where he became a crowd favourite, leading to a £50,000 move to Lennie Lawrences’s Luton in 1996.

At Kenilworth Road Paul was initially a regular in the side, well regarded as a maker and taker of goals, but then a series of injuries, some bizarre, led to him making only four appearances in two years.

Given his injury problems it came as no surprise when Paul was appointed physio at Peterborough.
