Ray Smith

Raymond Scorer Smith Born: 14th April 1929 From:
  1. Evenwood
  2. County Durham
  3. England

With a middle name such as this Ray could only have been a footballer but perversely only netted once during his Football League career!

After turning out for Evenwood Town, Ray was spotted by Luton and came to Kenilworth Road in 1950. A rugged, tough tackling wing-half, Ray made his League debut at Doncaster in 1951/52 and made his second appearance for the Hatters a year later on the same ground.

After only 12 appearances in seven years, Ray accepted a move to Southend in 1957 where he earned a regular place in the side. A spell at Hastings followed before he hung up his boots.

Ray worked in Luton until retirement and still lived in the town until he passed away in 2017.
