Ron Baynham

Ronald Leslie Baynham Date of Birth: Jun 10, 1929

Ron did not take up goalkeeping seriously until a stint in the army on National Service and declined a trial at Wolves because he did not think himself good enough.

After starring at Worcester City he now felt confident in accepting a move to Luton in 1951 and then spent the next four years sharing the goalkeeping duties with Bernard Streten before making the position his own.

Extremely brave and an expert cross taker, Ron won three caps for England and appeared for the Hatters in the 1959 FA Cup final before presiding over the club’s drop to Division Four.

Ron, who lives in Silsoe in retirement, is the subject of a video interview talking about his life and times in the game seen elsewhere on this website.
