Sam Mayberry

Samuel Mayberry Date of Birth: Sep 20, 1916

Sam was born in Bellshill in 1916 but the family moved to Scunthorpe when he was young. He played in goal for Gainsborough Trinity and was brought to Luton in 1938 as ‘one for the future’.

Handed a debut on the final day of the 1938-39 campaign, against Coventry at Kenilworth Road, the big, imposing keeper looked set to eventually replace Joe Coen but the War overtook events.

Sam was sadly killed in a munitions explosion in 1941.
