Scottish u-23 international goalkeeper Sandy had enjoyed seven years at Dundee United before being enticed to Luton in October 1968 for £8,000 and his form for the Hatters over the remainder of that season was a revelation.

Keeping 11 clean sheets in 27 starts, his campaign ended at the feet of a Southport forward over Easter 1969 and although he returned to the side the following campaign he was never quite the same player and it therefore came as a surprise when he was transferred to Southampton.

Sandy only managed one start for the Saints before returning to Dundee United and then emigrating to New Zealand in 1974 where he still lives.
