Stan Northover

Stanley Oswald Northover Date of Birth: Jul 3, 1926

Weymouth born Stan became an artificer in the Royal Navy, turning out for his local side whenever he could. His displays as a sharp, goalscoring inside-forward caught the eye of Luton Town who invited him to Kenilworth Road to appear in a friendly match against Leicester in January 1950 – a game set up as both sides were out of the FA Cup.

Amateur Stan made a huge impression and received permission from his employers to play for the Town again the following Saturday in a Division Two encounter with Swansea at Kenilworth Road.

Sadly, the game ended in defeat and with Stan some years away from discharge from the forces it was decided to part company leaving the player to return to the Navy and enjoy his football with Yeovil and Hastings.

Stan died in 1990.
