Steve McNulty

Steve McNulty Date of Birth: Sep 26, 1983

Born Liverpool, England. Steve was released by Liverpool in 2003 after having been on their books since the age of 7. He spent two seasons with Northern Premier League club Burscough before moving up to the Conference North with Vauxhall Motors in February 2005. A move to Barrow followed where, as club captain, he helped the club to promotion to the Conference Premier League. A commanding centre half he was named in the Conference North team of the season. At the end of his contract, the wage structure became an issue which resulted in Steve dropping down a division to play for Fleetwood Town. Again he was made club captain and lead them to promotion. The following season they challenged in the play offs but were beaten in the semi final.

2011/12 saw promotion as Champions of the Conference taking Fleetwood the the Football League for the first time in their history. He started the new season but fell out of favour when there was a managerial change. Allowed to leave on a free transfer, Luton manager Paul Buckle signed Steve in January 2013 on an 18 month contract.

Steve went straight into the team at Barrow a week after the famous F.A. Cup win at Norwich. He quickly became a favourite with the fans and the club and a two year extension was agreed at the end of April. He became the leader, captain and the rock around which the defence was built for the promotion winning season of 2013/14. Described as portly by some, he used his football brain to keep out of trouble. The promotion season saw Steve won Player of the Year, Internet player of the Year and Goal of the Season for his 30 yarder in the win against Southport at Kenilworth Road.  The following season Steve was made captain on the departure of Ronnie Henry and helped the club finish 8th in League One. He was included in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

Wanting to be nearer his family, Steve went on loan to Tranmere Rovers in October 2015. In January 2016 the deal was made permanent with an 18 month contract signed. He helped them into the 2017/18 National League (5th Tier) play off final in which they beat Borehamwood to gain promotion the League Two. More success came the following season in the League Two play off final.

A move to York City saw him take the Ministermen to defeat in the Conference North play offs. Steve ended his playing career at Witton Albion. A brief spell as Assistant Manager of Bootle followed.
