Following ten years at Bolton, who at the time yo-yoed between Divisions Three and Four, cultured midfielder Steve probably thought that his chances of playing in the top flight had passed him by until Luton manager David Pleat stepped in with a bid of £180,000 in August 1991.

It soon became apparent that he lacked pace at the top level, and so after five games Steve was swiftly off-loaded to Leicester in exchange for Des Linton and Scott Oakes. At Filbert Street Steve helped the Foxes to three successive play-offs with the third successful at which time he moved on to Burnley!

Steve finished his playing career with spells at Rotherham and Halifax before becoming assistant manager at Blackpool, Huddersfield, Leeds and Preston.
