Thomas Urwin

Thomas Urwin Date of Birth: Jan 26, 1893

Born in Scotswood, Newcastle in 1893, Thomas played for local club Newburn before being spotted by Sheffield United for whom he made two appearances leading up to the Great War.

Stationed in Hemel Hempstead during the War he turned out for the Town in London Combination games making a good impression as an energetic half-back.

Sadly, Thomas was gassed while on duty in France, invalided out of the army and sent back to Newcastle to recuperate.

Eventually getting back to some sort of fitness, Thomas turned out for Scotswood when the Town directors, who had kept him on their radar, invited him back in the summer of 1919.

He missed only two games in 1919-20 appearing in a variety of positions but most notably at right-half where he replaced Luton Town legend Bob Hawkes. Declining a contract for 1920-21 Thomas returned to the north-east to play for Ashington.
