Tom Mackey

Tom Mackey Date of Birth: Oct 22, 1908

Born in Cassop, Co Durham in 1908, Tom first came to prominence at Hartlepool in 1928 leading to a move to Sheffield Wednesday in December 1929 where he became a permanent reserve centre-half.

Joining the Town in June 1932 for £700 he was immediately converted to full-back and his career took off and by the time he retired from the game in 1938, to take on a position on the training staff at Kenilworth Road, he had played over 200 first team games and scored two goals. These both came at the back end of his playing days when, in the time before substitutes, he was injured and put out on the wing and netted twice against Burnley!

Tom remained at Kenilworth Road until after the FA Cup final in 1959 when he was part of a major culling of the staff. He then became a publican in Silsoe and passed away there in 1969.
