Wilf Crompton

Wilf, the son of former Blackburn and England stalwart Bob, was a two-footed winger who was to follow his father’s footsteps by turning out for Rovers.

Born in Blackburn in 1908, he probably needed to get out from under his father’s shadow and so enjoyed a couple of seasons at neighbours Burnley before an ill-advised move to Gillingham.

Knowing he was not settled in Kent, the Town nipped in a brought him to Kenilworth Road in November 1934 where he soon became a regular in the side as a goalscoring winger who was difficult to knock off the ball.

Sadly, a succession of knee injuries led to him quitting the game in 1937 from where he returned to his trade as a motor mechanic.

Wilf passed away in Lytham St Annes in 1971.
