Born in Ampthill in 1878, William came to Luton on trial from Hitchin and was called upon by a cash-strapped Town to fill in during the club’s disastrous last season in the Football League of 1899-00.
Playing as a half-back he never let the side down but once the pairing of Bob and Fred Hawkes became established he was not called up again and went back to playing locally.
William tragically died when he was hit by a train while working on the track near Bedford in 1927.
