Alexander McDonald

Born in Greenock in 1878, Alex got his big breakthrough in 1899 when he joined Everton. An inside-forward, he was never a regular at Goodison and played 23 games in two seasons before turning out in quick succession for Southampton, West Ham and Portsmouth.

A longer spell at Wellingborough was more successful and it was from there that he came to Luton in 1905 enjoying a good run as a forceful forward in 1905-06 but was more a bit-part player in the following campaign.

Looking for regular football again, he joined Croydon Common in 1907 where he had two good seasons and a third on the periphery before coming back to Luton in 1910 where he played most of his football in the reserves apart from one Southern League game where he deputised for Tommy Quinn.

Retiring from the game in 1911, Alex returned to Scotland. An active seaman with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary into his 70s he was drowned at Bo’Ness base in 1949.
