Andy Rennie
Andy Rennie Date of Birth: Nov 3, 1901 Share "Andy Rennie" on FacebookBorn in Bailliston in 1901, Andy started playing football in goal before moving to centre-half with Kilwinning Rangers where he was spotted by Town coach Billy Barr and brought to Luton in 1925.
After starting off in the reserves he soon made the first team centre-half spot his own until an injury crisis up front saw him move to the forward line during the 1927-28 campaign where he proved to be a revelation.
Nicknamed ‘Ratty’ due to his on-field demeanour he netted 23 goals that season most of which came at the end of a fierce shot where he was said to ‘swing his leg from the hip’. He became the country’s leading scorer in 1928-29 with 43 goals and remained top scorer until becoming a provider of chances in later years.
A falling out with the club’s directors and manager in December 1934 led to an undignified end to his Luton career and after a short spell at Newport he returned to Luton to work.
Andy sadly died from pneumonia in 1938, following a routine hernia operation, leaving a widow and two young daughters.
