Bournemouth born Forbes joined Southampton from school as a goalkeeper but having failed to make the grade in that position was converted into a centre-half by the Saints coaching staff.

Relishing his new role as a commanding stopper, Forbes was loaned out to, amongst others, Luton who were in desperate need having lost Chris Turner to the lure of the USA. The impressive Forbes played the last ten games of the 1978-79 campaign and helped the Hatters to avoid the drop from Division Two.

His reward was a £50,000 move to Plymouth where he was guaranteed a first team slot and from there he enjoyed a successful spell at Bristol City.

After leaving the game, Forbes became a painter and decorator in Verwood.
