Frank Lindley

Frank Louis Lindley Date of Birth: Oct 31, 1885

Born in Sheffield in 1890, Frank played locally before going in the opposite direction to most footballers of the time by moving to Scotland to turn out for Dundee and Motherwell.

Returning to Sheffield he played one game for United in 1912-13 before a productive season at Newport encouraged the newly promoted Town to sign him in the summer of 1914.

Although regarded as a winger he had played at centre-forward for Newport but was not going to oust Ernie Simms from that position, nor Sid Hoar on the wing, on a regular basis leading to him making only five appearances, although injuries did not help.

Wounded in action with the Green Howards in Italy during the Great War he was never fit enough to play professionally again.

Frank passed away in 1947.
