Harry Williams

Born in Hitchin in 1878, Harry was only 14 when he made his debut for his home town club and was a member of the Herts County team from a young age.

After a spell at St Albans he came to the notice of the Town who signed him in the summer of 1898 just as the club was about to enter its second season in the Football League.

A good defender who was useful in the air and with the ability to set up chances he could play either as full-back or in the half back line and over the next six seasons he was among the first names on the teamsheet and one of the few players to straddle the Football League and Southern League eras.

He eventually found himself out of the side in 1904-05 and after a short spell at Reading hung his boots up.

Harry’s eventual 187 first team games was a record for the club at that time.
