Herbert Oclee

Herbert William Oclee

Born in Tovil near Maidstone in 1864, Herbert came to Bedford as a teacher at Harpur Trust Elementary Boys School and started playing football for Bedford Town before being approached by Luton in 1891.

Although a winger at Bedford he was played at inside or centre-forward at Luton where he became known as a provider rather than scorer of goals. The signing of Hugh Galbraith put paid to his time at Luton leaving him to concentrate on his cricket where he was a fine fast bowler for Bedfordshire.

Herbert retired from the Harpur Trust school in 1923 after over 38 years there and passed away in Bromham in 1946.
