James Kemplay

James Kemplay Date of Birth: Jan 17, 1876

Born in Middlesbrough in 1876, James turned out for Middlesbrough FC and was instrumental in his side winning the FA Amateur Cup in 1895 and 1898.

At the end of the Town’s first season in the Football League in 1897-98 there was an exodus of players so the Town’s directors searched the country looking for replacements.

Centre-forward James fitted the bill, preparing to move south for the money on offer and was virtually ever present in 1898-99 in both the Southern League and United League finishing top scorer. After one season he declined the offer of a new contract and returned to Middlesbrough.

A joiner by trade, James passed away in Middlesbrough in 1951.
