Joe Mitchell

Born in Darnall, near Sheffield in 1886, Joe was playing in goal for local side Thorpe Hesley when he was spotted by Sheffield United, signing professional forms at Bramall Lane in 1909.

In four years with the Blades, Joe made only 36 appearances so when the Town, desperate to get out of Southern League Division Two, came calling he accepted the chance for regular football.

Signing in September 1913 for £50 (United originally wanted £250) he helped the Town to promotion with a series of brilliant performances (plus a few schoolboy errors!) and took the step up to Division One with ease.

Although registered with the Town during the Great War years, Joe guested for various clubs and in peacetime was offered the chance to get back into the Football League with South Shields. From there he went to Coventry and Chesterfield and was still playing football into his late 30s.

Joe passed away in Sheffield in 1964.
