Born in Market Rasen in 1859, John was the elder brother of Town legend Arthur and played for Grimsby Town in their pre-League days as a full-back until he was regarded as too old.
In 1893 the Town had a problem at full-back with Arthur suggesting his brother as a stop-gap. A joiner by trade and living near Grimsby, it was only going to be a short term solution but he did play a few games including the famous FA Cup win over Old Westminsters which turned out to be his final appearance.
