Eventually they took the plunge and signed him in April 1959, just before the Town’s appearance in the F.A.Cup final, and he made his debut at centre-forward on the closing day of the 1958/59 campaign at home to Blackpool.
The following season turned out to be a disaster for the Hatters, with relegation from Division One, with John, a constructive inside-forward, played mainly on the wing.
John was released in the wake of relegation and returned to Scotland with Stirling but died in a car accident in 1967, aged only 31, leaving a wife and four young daughters.
