Mark Lownds

Mark Usher Lownds Date of Birth: Nov 28, 1940

Strong and enthusiastic wing-half Mark was plying his trade with Ryhope Colliery Welfare when he was recommended to Luton Town by their scout in the north-east.

Mark initially signed for the Hatters as a part-time professional as he wanted to complete his apprenticeship first, but eventually made his League debut playing in an unfamiliar forward role and scoring in a 5-1 trouncing of Swansea in January 1962.

Gaining a regular place in the side in his favoured left-half position following relegation to Division Three in 1963, Mark always gave 100% but was powerless to prevent the slide into Division Four in 1965.

Mark left the club that summer on a free-transfer and settled in South Africa.
