The local newspapers could not make their minds up about this player who turned out at centre-forward in a United League game at Kenilworth Road against Crystal Palace in October 1906.

Two said he was from Middlesbrough while the other stated he was from Bolton. Two said he was ‘too light for first class football’ while the other said he had a ‘first class game.’ All three agreed that he was ‘plucky’ and that he was on trial.
