Asa Hall

Asa Philip Hall Date of Birth: Nov 29, 1986

Born in Dudley, West Midlands he rose through Birmingham city’s academy. He never made the first team but was loaned out to Boston United Ashford Town and Shrewsbury before signing for the Town in August 2008. A stylish midfielder with an eye for goal, he made his debut in a 3 1 home defeat to Port Vale in the minus 30 points season of 2008/09. A regular in the side that season making a total of 51 appearances scoring 11 goals from midfield. His first goal was a header in the 3-1 defeat of Aldershot in September 2008.

The Guardian newspaper reviewed Asa’s Johnstone Paint Trophy final performance in April 2009 -

“He was comfortable in whatever position the ball was played to him and he showcased a neat array of headers into his team-mates' paths, lovely touches on the move when coming towards the ball and deft first-time passes which gave his team-mates the chance to hit the ball early.

Another massive bonus for his manager is his awareness and ability in either penalty area – he was the one who marked Scunthorpe's big centre-half and always posed problems for their defence when Luton put the ball in the box from attacking corners and free-kicks. He is good in possession, rarely loses the ball and is adept with both feet, meaning he could switch the play left or right with ease. Hall is also a strong runner who covers the ground easily and showed great tenacity in the tackle although I wouldn't put him in the hard man bracket in that respect. In fact it was difficult to find any real weakness that stood out."

Asa had his own song.-

“Viva Asa Hall
Viva Asa Hall
Viva Asa Hall
Running down the wing
Hear the Luton sing
Viva Asa Hall”

Relegation to the Conference saw Asa again in his midfield role until he was ousted by the arrival of Simon Heslop and he fell out of favour. He was released in the Summer of 2010 when he signed for Oxford United where he stayed for two seasons. On to Shrewsbury for a less successful two season spell as he was loaned out to Aldershot and back to Oxford United.

On to Cheltenham Town in 2014 where a serious injury limited his appearances and he was released in the Summer of 2017. A decent season at Barrow was followed by a move to National League Torquay United in 2018 where he made a total of 192 appearances scoring 46 goals. After being released by the Gulls, Asa joined Tiverton Town in August 2024 as player coach and finished 17th in the Isthmian Southern South division.
