Bert Sanders

Albert Edward Sanders

Born in Dunstable in 1869, Bert attended school in Luton and was one of the founder members of the Luton Albany club which by 1885 was one of the top teams in the town.

Bert graduated into the newly formed Town club, initially in the reserves, and became a mainstay in the side until 1893. A ‘reliable back with a good kick who liked to get forward’, Bert eventually left, reverting to amateur status to play for Luton Montrose and St Albans.

By this time Bert was well known as a musical entertainer and had opened a musical equipment shop in Manchester Street so football on a professional level may not have sat comfortably with this.

Bert passed away in Luton in 1941 although his legacy lived on when a distant cousin, John Wilkinson, became club secretary in the 1970s and 1980s.
