Joe Scott

Joseph Cumpson Scott Date of Birth: Jan 9, 1930

After failing to make the grade at home town club Newcastle, Joe dropped down to non-League football with Spennymoor where he was spotted by Luton Town’s scout in the north-east and brought back to Kenilworth Road.

Although he scored on his League debut in a 2-4 defeat at Swansea in September 1952, National Service and injuries meant that it was while before Hatters fans saw the clever inside-forward get an extended run in the side.

When he did get in the side it was invariably out of position so he was pleased to go to Middlesbrough for £5,000 in 1954 where he became a consistent goalscorer.

Joe lived in Acklam in retirement until passing away in January 2018.
