Luton Town scout Cyril Beach recommended several Welsh youngsters to the Hatters with Hartson another off the conveyor belt signing professional terms in December 1992.

Scoring on his League debut at the start of the following campaign, John’s precocious talents came to the fore during the famous televised win over Newcastle in the F.A.Cup in February 1994.

The big clubs came sniffing around and Arsenal paid a record fee for a teenager of £2.5 million for the powerful striker in 1995 and since then he has become a regular for Wales and enjoyed several big money moves in both this country and Scotland.

On retirement from the game John became a TV pundit.
