Roy Wegerle
Roy Wegerle Date of Birth: Mar 19, 1964 Share "Roy Wegerle" on FacebookBorn in South Africa, Roy was only young when he moved to the USA but after starting his footballing career playing for the University of South Florida he was picked up by Tampa Bay Rowdies where his displays soon alerted European clubs.
Roy was then poached by Chelsea but was used only sparingly at Stamford Bridge leading to Luton taking a gamble on him in 1988. After a slow start, Roy suddenly burst into life with his superb close control, balance and scoring ability, especially on the Kenilworth Road artificial surface, and his performances helped the Hatters to a second successive date at Wembley for the Littlewoods Cup final.
Sadly, finances dictated that a £1 million bid from QPR, a record for both clubs at the time, was accepted in December 1989 and Roy went on to become a favourite at Loftus Road before becoming less successful following further big money moves to Blackburn and Coventry.
Roy re-invented himself when returning to the States, becoming a star in the MSL and earning call-ups for the national side.
Now involved in media work in the USA, Roy is also a golfer of note.
