Hopes of a third consecutive Wembley appearance are abruptly ended as ex- Hatter Mike Newell heads the first goal. Having defended well to this point, Luton are forced to chase the game and, as a result, the floodgates open. Preece hits the bar with the Hatters’ only chance of the game.
